A TALE OF A LIFE LONG NATURE NERD
...and the skills picked up along the way.
I’m an environmental writer and communicator with a background in marine science, research, education, and professional writing.
I translate complex science and policy into clear, engaging content for non‑specialist audiences.

SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS
3 years spent studying for my degree in marine biology and oceanography was the dream of my life.
I immersed myself in studying ecology, taxonomy, sustainability including fisheries and aquaculture, animal behaviour and anatomy and physical and chemical oceanography.
For my final project I worked with Plymouth Marine Laboratories to study the effects of ocean acidification on seaweed species, which was later published in the ICES Journal of Marine Science.
Here I gained skills in:
-
Working with scientific data
-
Interpreting scientific literature
-
Critical, evidence based thinking
-
Working both in labs and in the field
COMMUNICATING COMPLEXITY
After 18 months in an ecotoxicology lab, I moved into teaching as a biology specialist. Here, I developed one of my strongest professional skills: explaining complex ideas clearly, whilst maintaining accuracy and nuance.
I spent 8 years honing my ability to...
-
Break down difficult concepts for non‑specialist audiences
-
Build clarity and structure into explanations
-
Anticipate confusion and address misconceptions
-
Make science feel relevant and engaging
Alongside this, travel opportunities and wildlife experiences deepened my understanding of the real‑world tensions between conservation, communities, and policy.

WRITING AND CONTENT WORK
Alongside teaching, I began writing and running a nature‑focused blog, One Wild Thing. What started as a personal project became a practical education in research‑led writing, SEO, and digital content.
I've since left teaching to focus on pursuing freelance copywriting and content work and have written for a range of audiences and sectors, developing experience in:
-
Adapting tone and format for different goals
-
Writing long‑form explainers and articles
-
Creating content for web, reports, and digital platforms
-
Producing simple visual content to support written work
Environmental Writing and Communication
Now I'm bringing together everything I've learned along the way, all the skills I've built and the experience I've gained, pulled back by my love of wildlife, to give nature the voice it deserves.
My focus is on helping charities, NGOs, and research organisations:
-
Explain complex science and policy in an accessible manner
-
Communicate impact and outcomes of studies and projects
-
Support outreach, education, and fundraising
-
Engage non‑specialist audiences with clarity and credibility
I believe good environmental communication isn’t about simplifying the issue, but about making complexity understandable.
